To improve your safety score (CSA score / Safety Measurement System (SMS)) from the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration), it is essential to take a systematic approach to monitoring, prevention, and the correction of errors.
What is the CSA program?
The Compliance, Safety, and Accountability (CSA) program, administered by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Is designed to hold drivers—including owner-operators. Accountable for their role in road safety. The FMCSA groups motor carriers with a similar number of safety incidents and assigns them a percentile. Technically, the FMCSA does not issue “CSA scores,” although this term is often used as shorthand for CSA percentiles. Safety data is stored online in the FMCSA’s Safety Measurement System (SMS) and is updated monthly with new data from roadside inspections.
Key strategies to improve your score
Monitor and review your scores monthly: Regularly check the official Safety Measurement System (SMS) portal or use telematics tools to detect violations before the FMCSA uses them to prioritize interventions.
Challenge errors via DataQs: If an inspection, fine, or accident record contains incorrect information, or if you have obtained a favorable court ruling (such as a dismissal or a finding of not guilty), submit a formal request through the DataQs portal, attaching solid evidence (such as ELD footage, police reports, and official documents).
Implement a rigorous preventive maintenance program: A large proportion of violations stem from mechanical issues with lights, brakes, and tires. Conduct daily pre-trip inspections and regular audits of the vehicles.
Screen drivers in advance (PSP): Pre-Employment Screening Program (PSP) to review operators’ driving history and violations before hiring them. Additionally, provide them with ongoing training on Hours of Service (HOS) regulations and safe driving.
